Taking in the View

Chataneys instagram

A mini-MHT reunion happened last week in Chicago.  It turns out the Chastaney (former intern), Robbie (MHT Tech Director) and myself were all in the Windy City at the same time.  We chose to meet up at the top of the John Hancock Building for a 360 degree view of Chicago at night.

At a 1000 feet in the air it was breathtaking.  We gave a collective gasp and then quietly split up to take it all in.  We regrouped at a table, compared notes on all we’d seen and which buildings we’d recognized.  Then a funny thing happened.
We just shot the breeze and got to know each other better.
This is the walk of those following after Christ:
* We accept the breathtaking wonder of a God that cares deeply for each of us.
* We are individually changed as we learn how He speaks to each and everyone of us.
* We gather to share all we’ve learned and learn from each other.
* And we recognize the value in each other and just fellowship together!
What a blessed life we’re all invited to enjoy.

Exchanging “Why”s for “How”s

Last night was a little rough.  Trying to sleep with a cold without the “best sleep you’ll ever get with a cold medicine” was an experience.  Now add on an unexpected series of phone calls and texts starting at 2am from a pair of friends needing help.  Real serious help.

That is nothing to complain about and actually made me feel honor that they would think of me as someone ready at all times to assist when it really mattered.  And you know what?  I still do not even know the full story of what was going on … because I did not ask.

The responses from my end were groggy grunts of compliance.  The timing nor my level of readiness matter.  The tone of a close friend will let you know that real talk is happening and real action is being required of you.  You know who the reasonable people are in your life that already think things through and are frivolous in their requests.

Now awake again after some sleep my internal clock is a bit reset and the internal parts of me have reset as well.  I awake with a question on my heart asking “Why God Why?” over matters of my own life.

Do you know what He says to me?

He impresses upon me that just hours ago I trusted friends.  It was inconvenient timing and an incomplete picture but my response wasn’t full of “why”s but simply “how” can I respond to help.  If  I can trust friends, mere people, like this why not the God of the Universe with that small level of courtesy?

If I know a friend well enough to not ask for a full picture but just how to help, can I not exercise the same faith with the One I believe is in the past, present and future?

In the middle of the night I did not ask my friends “why did you call me? or what is going on” instead simply “how can I help?”

God asks the same of us.  In the midst of my life at the times I have planned to rest or times I think I am too busy fighting of a sickness or something else He simply asks “Trust in [Me] with all your heart; do not depend of your own understanding.  Seek [my] will in all you and do, and [I] will show you which path to take. (Prov 3:5-6)”

Sharing Nourishment from the Word

Although this is referring to the Lord’s Supper it also paints a picture of gathering to study God’s Word.

If we’ve reverently come together to gain nourishment from His Words and exercise His love we wouldn’t come together like a pack of wild animals.  It’s not about the bigger and stronger delving in faster to pull back the most meat for themselves.

No, we are a family and we pull apart and dig deep to share with each other.

What a gluttonous thing we sometimes do!  We dig into the Word in the presence of others and get drunk while they starve.  They have come to the feast of His Word because they are hungry as well and we say: “Well you should have been faster, stronger” while we chew away and let them starve on the sidelines.

The challenge is to show up, prayed up.  Before community group if you already starving strengthen yourself privately so you have some restraint in public.  Then you exercise patience to help feed those around you that can not feed themselves.

(Inspired by 1 Corinthians 11:20-22)

A Complete Set of Silverware

Lot of elements of our walk with Christ are described as growth.  We grow in our faith, grow in discernment and grow in knowledge.  Yet as we grow our diet should change as well.
Just like a baby that is breastfed and spoonfed eventually they learn to feed themselves and eat with silverware. So once you were a spiritual baby that needed to be spoonfed the Word of God.  You needed someone to prepare it for you.  Maybe even make fun noises and faces as they fed you the truth.  Maybe even set up a time schedule to make sure you didn’t miss a feeding because you couldn’t identify hunger.  You just cried when something wasn’t right and were happy when your belly got full.
However as you grow you gain access to a full set of silverware.  You’ve learned that God has forgiven you, Jesus did a finished work on the Cross, God is revealing Himself to you and the Scripture is the breathed Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
So when the time is right let’s begin to ween ourselves off the bottle and grab a knife and fork.  There is a time to rightfully divide the Word of God ourselves and in a community of others. So that we can start teaching others. (Hebrews 5:11:14)
Just think a baby doesn’t grow up to be a Bodybuilder by still doing childish things.  They put down the Nintendo Wii fit and actually go out and weight train.
And even if we don’t feel that God has called us to be a Theologian (or spiritual bodybuilder), I sure we’re all very clear that he doesn’t call even of us to forever stay on milk.  Why then we would belong on a TLC show: “The 300 month old baby that still drinks from a bottle”

A Starting Point

It’s the beginning of the month and time for me to write out bills again. I dislike this process for many reasons one of them being it makes me come face-to-face (yet again) with how little funds I have to start with. Grrr.

However knowing what we’re starting with makes getting Read the rest of this entry »

Compassion Not CoDependency

Jesus was ready to chill and let his men chill.

Yet people stalked out his location and like paparazzi were waiting for him to make an appearance. They all knew Jesus was coming and decided to show up and lay in wait for Him.

When Jesus saw them He amended His earlier plans of Read the rest of this entry »

There’s Something About John

There was something about John that Herod was drawn too.

Herod possessed a respect for John and the way John lived his life (“knowing he was a good and holy man”) that drove him to require an audience with John.

Herod listened to this “good and holy man” speak even though the discussion would leave him disturbed. Disturbed is another way Read the rest of this entry »

Slow Your Roll

Balaam sought God before committing to a course of action. He even went back to check with God again when he thought things might have changed.

Balaam seems very much like someone that wanted to please God.

However on the trip when odd things happened Read the rest of this entry »

Staying in Step

So the new vision of Jairus and Jesus was that Jairus stayed with Jesus.

Yep, what the story tells is that a man went to Jesus with a sense that was of great urgency: his daughter was dying.  Jesus agreed to go to Jairus’ house and see the girl but on the way Read the rest of this entry »
